It is celebrated with great devotion and love for the long life, prosperity, and well-being of the husband. करवा चौथ व्रत हिंदू स्त्रियों द्वारा अपने पति की लंबी आयु, सुख और समृद्धि के लिए रखा जाने वाला एक पवित्र व्रत है। इस दिन महिलाएं सूर्योदय से चंद्रोदय तक निर्जला उपवास रखती हैं और शाम को चंद्र दर्शन के बाद ही व्रत तोड़ती हैं।

- सवेरे सरगी खाना: व्रत से पहले सास द्वारा दी गई सरगी खाई जाती है।

एक समय की बात है, एक साहूकार के सात बेटे और एक बेटी थी। उस बेटी का नाम वीरावती था। वह अपने भाइयों की बहुत प्यारी थी। जब वीरावती का विवाह हुआ, तब उसकी पहली करवा चौथ आई। वह अपने मायके में थी और विधि-विधान से व्रत रखा।
सूर्योदय से लेकर रात तक उसने कुछ भी नहीं खाया और न पिया। संध्या होते-होते वह बहुत कमजोर हो गई और बेहोश होकर गिर पड़ी। भाइयों से अपनी बहन की यह हालत देखी न गई। उन्होंने अपनी बहन से कहा — “बहन, अभी चाँद निकल आया है, तुम व्रत खोल लो।”
वीरावती ने ऊपर देखा तो पेड़ की डालियों के बीच से एक चमकता हुआ प्रकाश दिखा, जो चाँद जैसा लग रहा था। वास्तव में भाइयों ने पेड़ पर दीपक जलाकर छल किया था। वीरावती ने उसे चाँद समझकर व्रत खोल लिया।
जैसे ही उसने पहला निवाला खाया, उसे पति के मृत्यु का संदेश मिला। यह देखकर वह विलाप करने लगी। दुखी होकर वह अपने ससुराल पहुंची और अपने पति के शव के पास बैठकर रात-दिन रोने लगी।
उसकी सच्ची श्रद्धा देखकर माता पार्वती उसके सामने प्रकट हुईं और बोलीं —
“हे वीरावती, तेरे भाइयों के छल के कारण तेरा व्रत अधूरा रह गया। इसीलिए तेरे पति की मृत्यु हुई है। यदि तू पूरे श्रद्धा से करवा चौथ का व्रत रखेगी और पूरे नियमों से पूजा करेगी, तो तेरा पति पुनः जीवित हो जाएगा।”
वीरावती ने माता पार्वती के बताए नियमों के अनुसार अगली करवा चौथ पर पूर्ण व्रत किया। उसकी श्रद्धा और भक्ति से प्रसन्न होकर माता पार्वती ने उसे आशीर्वाद दिया और उसका पति पुनः जीवित हो उठा।
तब से हर वर्ष करवा चौथ व्रत का पालन स्त्रियाँ अपने पति की लंबी आयु और सुखद दांपत्य जीवन के लिए करती हैं।
Complete Karva Chauth Story in English (The Legend of Queen Veeravati)
Once upon a time, there was a wealthy merchant who had seven sons and one beloved daughter named Veeravati. She was dearly loved by all her brothers. After her marriage, she came home to celebrate her first Karva Chauth.
She observed a strict fast from sunrise without food or water. As the evening approached, she became extremely weak and fainted. Seeing her condition, her brothers became anxious. They decided to deceive her out of love and concern.
They created a fake moon by placing a mirror in a tree and told their sister that the moon had risen. Believing them, Veeravati broke her fast and took food.
Soon after, she received the tragic news that her husband had suddenly died. Heartbroken, she cried bitterly and blamed herself for breaking the fast before the real moonrise.
Moved by her devotion and grief, Goddess Parvati appeared before her and said —
“Veeravati, your husband’s death is a result of your incomplete fast. If you observe the Karva Chauth Vrat again next year with full faith and devotion, your husband will regain his life.”
With complete dedication, Veeravati observed the fast again the following year, strictly following all rituals. Pleased with her devotion, Maa Parvati blessed her husband with life again.
From that day forward, women across India observe Karva Chauth with faith and devotion for their husbands’ long lives and happiness.
